Travis is doing well. A new socket has been molded for his new hip and he is hoping to be up and walking again soon. He also saw the optometrist (Tuesday, I think) and they ran some initial test to see how the Boston contact might work. The results were positive and so he returns (today, I think) to the optometrist to do the "which one is better, one... or two?" test to determine the exact prescription necessary in the lens. When he was home the week after the 4th of July, he went trap shooting with his grandfather. Because he is right handed but his right eye is bad, he decided to try shooting left handed so he could use his left eye. He shot 24 out of 25 targets! The men who shoot with them were very impressed and grandpa is still busting his buttons over it : )
San Antonio is hot so Travis is hoping Hurricane Dolly provides some rain.
Oh, I do hope things are going well in your lives!

Travis is back in San Antonio and practicing on his legs again. I'm sure he'll be back where he was before the surgery in no time.
I've sent our webmaster a picture and DVD of the "First Pitch" in Arizona so watch for them on the website.
Hope you're staying cool,

Our Diamondbacks First Pitch experience was incredible! Travis looked great in his uniform and we were treated like celebrities. Our seats ended up being perfect, right next to the promenade and in an area large enough that many of the friends who were at the game were able to come by and visit. We even met Mario Diaz and his wife Tara. Mario is the brother of Tech Sgt. Eddie Diaz who wrote the River City story that is posted on the website. Sgt. Diaz still reads the website and ask his brother to go to the game and meet Travis. It was very meaningful for me and I'm looking forward to the time I can meet Sgt. Diaz.
Travis was one of three First Pitches which followed the introduction of 17 other military men. At least 5 of them were Purple Heart recepients from the Arizona National Guard. The other two pitches were thrown by a 1st Lt. and a 2 star General. The general came over and shook Travis's hand, passing him the general's challenge coin during the handshake and then visiting for several minutes. When the general stepped away, his assistant told Travis, "I knew the General for a long time before I received one of his coins, you meet him for 2 minutes and he gives you a coin!" The pitches were shown on the Jumbotron, starting with Travis's official Marine picture and then followed by live feed of the 3 men. It was exciting and lots of fun. The Diamondbacks have sent us a DVD of the 3 pitches and an 8x10 glossy of Travis with the ball in the air. They are wonderful momentos of a wonderful experience.
Thanks for caring!

Happy 4th of July!
We're headed to Phoenix. This is exciting! We'll be staying at the Embassy Suites on 24th and Thomas. If you are in Phoenix come by and say "Hello"
Please be in prayer for the war and Travis's unit. Travis heard today that a high ranking officer in his unit was killed by a suicide bomber and an NCO injured. He wasn't told names, but God knows them and their families.
Be safe and have a fun weekend.

Not much to report. Travis seems to be doing well and is coming home for 10 days, several days before and after our trip to Phoenix for the 4th.
I'm thrilled about the First Pitch at the Diamondbacks game. Many of you have ask for details, this is what I know: The game starts at 6:40 pm and is covered by FSNArizona. The First Pitch is not usually shown on television, but since it is a holiday with pomp and circumstance, who knows! There is a pregame show called Diamondbacks Live that airs right before the game so check it out and you might see something. The Diamondbacks are also providing us with a DVD of the throw. I'll ask for permission for Courtney to put it on the website. GO DIAMONDBACKS!
It's hot here and going to be hotter in Phoenix, hope you're staying cool.

I'm sorry this is so late. As soon as I was home, Casey and Lauren threw their suitcases in the car with mine and we headed to a golf tournament and family reunion. This is the first chance I've had to get on a computer. The family reunion is at Courtney, our webmaster's house, and the first thing she said to me today was, "don't forget your update."
Travis is doing well from his surgeries. His vision improved a lot when it was tested, but he doesn't see much difference when just looking around. The Boston contact will be tried when the eye is well healed, probably mid July. His abdomen is also healing well. The doctors said he could do most anything he needed, but not to do any exercising. I mentioned the First Pitch on July 4th and the doctor was excited and told him to have a great time, so we're good to go on that.
I enjoyed my 2 weeks with Travis and I know he appreciated my being there, but no doubt he was a relieved to see me leave so I would stop trying to do so much for him.
I better get back to the family reunion. Hope all of you can enjoy your family sometime this summer, too.

Travis has had 2 small hernias that the general surgery team has been watching. Saturday he called to tell us that the surgeons had decided to tag team with ophthalmology and do the eye surgery and hernia repair all during the same surgery on Monday. I threw in a couple of extra shirts and made sure my ticket home from San Antonio was open ended.
We checked in for out-patient surgery at 9:30 Monday morning. He was called back about 2:00 and the eye surgery began about 3:30. At 4:30 the cornea specialist came out to report that the eye surgery had gone very well, it was as good as possible. Travis's iris has been repaired and lens replaced. Now he needs to heal before they try the Boston contact and see if his vision will be improved.
The general surgeons thought they were dealing with two small hernias in spots weakened by his previous surgeries and that it would take an additional hour to hour and a half. As that time line came and went I was very glad for the company of my cousin, Dana, who lives here in San Antonio. The surgery took a little over 3 hours because there was a larger, hidden hernia in his obliques. Because of the late hour (8:00 pm) they admitted him for the night. I think Travis was much better off because I was able to get a good nights sleep without being concerned for him and on Tuesday he was able to just relax in the hospital bed and wait for ophthalmology to come see him instead of sitting in their waiting room. We headed back to his barracks room (I'm staying in the Fisher House) late Tuesday afternoon. He transfers to his wheelchair slowly, but is doing well. We're playing cards and taking naps and I am feeling GREAT! I told one of my cousins it might have something to do with not having to deal with supper. ha
I'm not sure when I will head home. Travis can't do any heavy lifting for 4 weeks so that takes him out of physical therapy and he certainly won't be doing any walking, so he needs some company if for nothing more than to help occupy his time. He gets cabin fever pretty easily.
There are so many of you that continue to encourage and support us, but I want you to know we realize that you also have problems and needs. Within my close circle of friends and family we are dealing with many other problems; financial, relational and health. Just last night we learned my much younger cousin's husband has thyroid cancer. Life is hard ...but God is good. We continue to pray that He meets your needs and uses others to encourage you as He has used you to encourage us.
With much love,

Last week I was so interested in watching Travis do his regular routine and reporting on it that I forgot to update you on his eye surgery. He had an appointment with ophthalmology on Tuesday, May 27. At that appointment the cornea specialist told Travis that he would like to hold off on the cornea transplant for a couple of reasons:
- The younger you are the better your immune system and the more likely you are to reject the new cornea
- A cornea transplant only lasts about 15 years, so Travis would be looking at several transplants in his lifetime
- There is new technology out in contacts called a Boston contact that would very likely give Travis pretty good vision
Travis commented that during his last appointment a trial Boston contact was put in his eye and he was very surprised with how much it improved his vision.
SO- on Monday, June 9 Travis is going to have his lens replaced because he has developed a cataract and the doctor is going to try to fix the iris that has gotten caught up in the scar tissure from the shrapnel. (The doctors in Palo Alto did not attempt to fix the iris for fear of causing a cataract, but since a cataract has developed these doctors said it is worth a try.) One certain doctor specializes in the Boston contact and when he returns to BAMC, I think late June or early July, Travis will be fitted for the contact. The doctor we saw is hopeful that Travis will then have 20/60 or maybe even 20/40 vision. How exciting.
And we have MORE exciting news. You might remember that Dave Edwards is a man who grew up in Deming and is now one of the trainers for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He came to visit Travis in Palo Alto and brought the signed D-back jersey. Well, we have kept in touch and I let him know we were going to be in Phoenix over the 4th of July weekend. He called back a few days later and said the Diamondbacks are planning a big celebration to honor our military at the game on the 4th and the president of the D-backs wants TRAVIS TO THROW OUT THE FIRST PITCH!! Yahoo, Mountain Dew!! We are excitied!!
I also want to update you on Casey's mom. She is so back to normal that it is unbelievable. When she commented to her doctor that she is a little more tired in the evenings than she used to be, the doctor reminded her that she is missing 1/4 of a lung. I had to smile because she is doing so well that we hadn't even thought of that.
I would appreciate your prayers for Travis's eye and his walking. I remember in Bethesda praying, "Lord, he's lost so much. Couldn't he have his vision back?" Perhaps now God is showing us his answer is Yes. Oh, I hope so.

Casey, Lauren, and I are in San Antonio visiting Travis. Casey's last day in school was Friday so we hopped in the car and headed over here. We made a quick stop at Balmorhea. When Lauren realized we were slowing down to get off the interstate, we had to listen to the regular teenage verbage of "I can't believe we're doing this, this is so stupid, etc., etc., etc." But when we left she said, "That was pretty cool, we should come here camping sometime." Teenagers, I only have one left to finish raising!
Of course the main event for us here in San Antonio is watching Travis walk. He walks everyday for about 45 min. and it has been eye opening for me to see. He is doing amazingly well, but it is not easy. Balancing is tricky and any little unlevel places in the sidewalk make walking precarious. He commented that he needs to walk outside more and not just around the track in the CFI so he gets practice with all the stuff of real life walking. He's not ready to step up or down from curbs and he said grass is really, really hard. The ground is soft and the blades grab his feet.
Oh I covet your prayers, asking God to continue giving Travis the determination and strength to learn to walk.

Deming must be having a hands on lesson about the dust bowl days of the 1930's. I took a picture out our front window with my phone of the house across the street and sent it to Travis and Haley. They both said, "I really couldn't see much." EXACTLY, I said. You could tell there was a house across the street but you couldn't see the details, like the door or windows.
(start the music) School's out for the summer... So we are loading up and going to see Travis. Ana is visiting at the moment and we will arrive a few hours after she has left. Brooke Army Medical Center (and the Center for the Intrepid) won an award for best Army hospital or something like that, so the General is giving them 4 days off this weekend instead of just 3. Friday morning Travis is participating in some type of triathlon. He will swim, hand bike, and I guess roll, for a certain distance. I'll get more details when we see him Sunday. Then Tuesday he has his ophthalmology appointment to schedule his cornea replacement. We are hoping to watch him walk on his legs, swim, and surf on the flowrider while we're visiting - he said he has learned to do lots of tricks on the flowrider. We should have a great time.
Golly, a year ago this weekend we were welcoming home Travis from the hospital. Please join me in praying for the families of our service men and women who didn't get to experience such a wonderful homecoming and for the families of our veterans who have passed away. Deming recently lost one of our Pearl Harbor survivors. They really are from one of the greatest generations ever.
God bless America,

Travis's Wounded Warrior trip ended today, he is flying back to San Antonio as I write. I think the Wounded Warrior trips are just amazing. He gets to experience some wonderful activities all geared to prove to him that he can live a full and rich life. I'll tell you, they certainly have proved it to his mother! On this trip Travis has been surfing, scuba diving, in a shark cage, up in an airplane while some of the other guys sky dived, and the more normal tourist activity - taken a tour of Pearl Harbor. I think he would have sky dived, too, if the harness had stayed secure on him. Wow!
Here's a fun little story that I hope I can write so that it makes sense to you readers. Lauren, Travis's little sister, just played golf in Albuquerque in the State golf tournament. One of the girls in her threesome was from Artesia, NM and I had read in one of Travis's Wounded Warrior magazines that the Chase family from Artesia are huge contributors to the Wounded Warrior Project, funding an elk hunt on their ranch in Wyoming. While the girl's parents and I walked around the course I told them about Travis and ask if they knew the Chase family. They said yes, and that as a matter of fact, an Artesia boy playing in the tournament was the son of the man who manages the Chase Foundation for them. I immediately decided that I wanted to meet the young man and ask him to tell his father that the mother of a wounded warrior said a very heartfelt "thank you" to all of them. As everyone gathered at the clubhouse for awards, I looked around for the group from Artesia and a man in an Artesia High shirt walked right by me. I stopped him and ask if he knew which young man was playing as an individual from Artesia and he said, "Yes, I do. He's my son, I'll get him for you." I said, "Oh, Sir, you are really the one I wanted to talk with!" We chatted for quite a few minutes and shed a few tears together. Just like all the other people I have met through Travis, he is a kind and warm human being.
I have thanked God for wonderful people like these families and all of you who have supported our Military and encouraged our wounded. Thank you for your help- whether emotional, financial, or spiritual!

It's just as well I forgot to write the update last night, I didn't have much to say. But then a beautiful Mother's Day card arrived in the mail today! It is one of those sweet, gushy cards with lots of writing, all about the bond between a mother and son. It is beautiful. The past year and 3 months has been tragic and yet wonderful. Few mothers get to spend such hours with their 21/22 year old son and see such beauty and strength of character emerge.
As I type, I'm sure Travis is in the ocean either surfing or scuba diving. I know he is having a ball. He promised to take pictures, and I'm sure the Wounded Warrior Project people have some photographers along. If you are interested, here are websites for four of the many organizations that are helping these guys in tremendous ways.
Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers, and I hope you also receive a beautiful, heartfelt card or your sons and daughters throw open the door and you have a special day together!

Travis is practicing his walking daily and has walked a mile around the CFI and outside around the barracks. He leaves next Tuesday for a weeklong Wounded Warrior surfing and scuba diving trip and has been spending time outside everyday so he won't sunburn.
I continue to be grateful for so many Americans who contribute to the organizations that are helping our wounded realize how full and rich their lives can still be.

Yesterday Travis called and reported he had just walked 1 mile!!!! It took him between 30-45 minutes. A mile! Amazing! Today his legs were lengthened 1 inch and it surprised him how much more difficult it was. We'll see if he quickly gets used to it or if it takes a lot more effort. This weekend he is taking his legs to the barracks with him for the first time so he can practice over the weekend.
My prayer has now become more about comfort; that the Lord would be gracious enough to allow him to be comfortable with his legs on, whether sitting, standing, or walking. And I still pray that he walk with the Lord.
I thank God for you, and for your prayers and your concern for us.

Travis has walked 3/4 of a mile around the track inside the CFI. The track is on the 4th floor and it takes 26 laps to make a mile. Travis says the walking is getting a little bit easier but is still hard.
Last week I was asked if I could drive a woman who lives in Deming to Las Cruces for a medical treatment that she needs. The man who ask me said, "She is a double amputee and I think it would be good for her to meet you." As it turned out, it was good for me to meet her! She is 75 years old, lives alone, and several years ago lost both legs above the knees. She is happy and vibrant and moves easily from her power wheelchair into the passenger seat of a car. As we chatted, she made the comment that she figured she could be "depressed and die or laugh and live." I felt like I was looking into the future and getting a glimpse of how Travis might be at 75. Every once in a while the giant called Fear has taunted me and said, "Sure, Travis is doing well now, but how well will he be able to do when he is older?" Wasn't God nice to provide me with a lovely day with a lovely woman and reassure me that Travis will be OK?
I hope all of you have a wonderful week and God reassures you about your fears. May we all listen to "the voice of truth."

Travis has walked 1/2 mile around the track at the CFI. We are so excited. The track is small, it takes 26 laps to be a mile, so Travis has made 13. He said it is getting a little bit easier to walk and balance and he uses 2 canes rather than crutches.
Casey's mom is doing great! She seems to have almost totally recovered from the surgery and only has 1 more chemo treatment to go. Wowie!! Everytime I see her she has more pep and vitality than the previous time, she is really doing well.
I just heard from Amy Perella, one of the friends of the Fishers that we met in Bethesda last year. She is at the Master's golf tournament having a ball. She has had some health issues herself and said she has drawn strength and encouragement from the wounded warriors she has met. God really can use everything for good, can't He.
Speaking of the Master's, Travis is going to the Master Sergeant's house for a Master's golf tournament party. Casey will be parked in front of the tv for most of the weekend watching and routing for Tiger. Hope all of you have a great weekend and thank you for your prayers for Travis and for Helen.

Travis is walking on his tall legs about 45 minutes a day, practicing the technique and building tolerance for the pressure on his limbs. Today he walked to the hospital from the CFI, which is across a large parking lot and up a slight incline. Hurray!
Roy Hyde, Travis's roommate from New Mexico Military Institute, came to visit last weekend from California and stayed through the week. I'm sure they've had some intense video game competition and found some good places to eat. How fun.
Have a great week.

Oh, we enjoyed Travis being home. I wish Haley had been able to be here, too, but it is an election year so Chris is VERY busy. We always enjoy Ana, too. She is a good sport and attends all our family functions while she's here and never acts like we are the weirdest family she's ever seen.
Travis and I went to watch Lauren's golf tournament on Monday. My sister joined us. Travis lasted about 3 holes listening to Rhonda and I blab and then his dad came by and he said, "Hey, Pops, I think I'll ride with you." We couldn't believe it!
Did any of you watch the final episode of Celebrity Apprentice? Each of the celebrities was playing for charity, and the winner's charity was the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Toward the end of the show a clip was shown of the CFI, the facility and a few of the guys. It was great. One of the guys, Matthew Bradford, was stationed in Hawaii with Travis. They knew each other only slightly because Matthew was in Echo Co. and Travis was in Golf Co. Matthew was injured in Nov. before Travis was injured in Feb. and we met him and his family in Bethesda when we were there. When we arrived at the CFI in June, Matthew and his family had been there for a while and are still there. Matthew and his mom along with another wounded warrior from the CFI were flown to New York for the Apprentice finale; Matthew was the Marine in dress blues at the very end of the show. I don't know exactly how much money was given to the Fallen Heroes Fund because of the show, but it was at least $500,000. A huge amount. I went on the CFI's website and learned that since the year 2000, this fund has given out 20 million dollars to help our fallen heroes and their families. Thank you, America, for your generousity to help our injured Military!!! They have given so much for us!
Have a great day and count your many blessings, all given by God but many insured by the brave men and women in our armed forces.

In the words of one of my favorite Easter hymns, CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY, ALLELUIA!
Travis and Ana arrived in Deming Tuesday night. I'm sure they came early because he missed his mama! : ) Haley and Chris are not able to come. He is in politics, working for the Democratic party, and you probably know that this is a presidential election year and there is a lot going on in the Democratic corner. : )
Last Thursday Travis went to Haley's preschool with her. He said the little students (3 and 4 year olds, I think) looked him over as they entered the room and many ask, "Where are your feet?" He responded that he lost them in an accident, but he said he wanted to say, "I didn't eat my vegetables when I was little." !!!! We've all giggled at the thought of these little guys begging for vegetables at supper that night! : ) Haley said the students all took turns playing with Travis, he sat on the floor and played whatever little learning games they brought to him. At some point they had a circle time and discussed Travis' new legs. He told them about the computers in the knees and several students whispered to their neighbor that they wish they had computers in their knees. He also demonstrated his push-ups, the kind he does from a handstand position, which are pretty amazing even to us adults! The next day several moms came in the room with their child to talk to Haley and tell her that Travis was their child's only topic of conversation the entire evening.
In the Bible, the theme of the book of Daniel is 'There is a God in heaven'. And John tells us that God became a man and came to earth to dwell among us. He showed us how live, how to love our neighbor, help the poor, and honor our parents, to mention just a few. But in just this week alone He showed us how to walk with grace and trust when we are humiliated, beaten down, lied about, and even unjustly convicted of wrong doing. "PRAISE BE THE NAME OF GOD FOREVER AND EVER! WISDOM AND POWER ARE HIS." Dan 2:20
Glory be to the risen God,

Spring is in the air and the weather is beautiful in Deming. The colleges are having their spring breaks and that leads me to Travis. He is flying to Phoenix tomorrow morning (Thursday) where his sister, Haley, will pick him up at the airport. He is spending the day with her at the preschool where she works (she says the kids and teachers are excited to meet him) and Ana will come to Phoenix after her classes Thursday and join them. She never has class on Fridays so she gets a little headstart on her spring break. She and Travis are going to some river or lake (I had to ask, "in Phoenix?!?") to play for a few days. I don't know exactly where, a little north I think, but I'm sure they will have fun. Then next Thursday they will drive to Deming and spend the Easter weekend with us. Haley and Chris are coming, too, and we have time scheduled with both Nana & Papa and a big family party. It should be fun.
Yesterday (Tuesday) two local National Guardsmen arrived back home in Deming after a year in Iraq. Both wonderful young men, one of them a classmate of Travis's. It was so good to hug them and see them healthy and in one piece.
I hope you can really focus on the Lord during the coming Holy Week. May He bless you greatly with knowledge of Himself.

Things are going well with Travis. He continues to practice daily on his tall legs with knees. No doubt it is hard, but I haven't heard him complain or whine. He continues to be positive and determined.
Casey's mom is continuing her recovery from surgery and is in the midst of the chemo therapy. The chemo has knocked her down some, she has lost weight (which she didn't have to lose) and lost energy, but she hasn't lost her determination or positive attitude, either.
This week I have had the priviledge of reading to several classes at the elementary where I taught. I chose a darling book about American soldiers in Japan about a year after the end of WWII as they entertain children on a school playground by doing tricks on a bicycle. I then showed pictures of Travis and we talked a little about Iraq and what Travis is doing now. They were very impressed with the surfing and scuba diving pictures. I ended by telling them that the lesson I want them to remember from Travis is that some horrible, tragic things may happen in their lives, but they can still choose to stay happy and live a wonderful life.
I hope we all remember that lesson, too.

I'M SORRY!! I forgot to write the update. Well, I didn't completely forget, I would think of it at 3:00 in the morning, but not think of it when you are actually supposed to be thinking of such things.
Travis is using crutches (the kind that reach to your forearms) and walking quite a lot. He has walked around the CFI and even gone outside on the sidewalk. He says it is hard but I know he is making progress.
Here's what's happening with Travis's eye. A hard contact was tried to see if it would correct his vision and it did not. Travis reports that surgery is scheduled for the last week of March to replace his cornea and "something about the lens." He couldn't remember exactly what was happening about the lens but I know the doctors in Palo Alto said a cataract would not be unusual.
Yesterday I commented on some tricks he can do on the flowrider (the surfing machine at the CFI). He said, "Oh, Mom, I can do so many more tricks than that now." So when I go for his eye surgery I'm going to go a few days early so I can see him in action.
My prayers are still that he walk with God and walk comfortably on this earth and that his vision be restored. Thanks for joining me in those.

The website has been down, no fault of Courtney's. She paid the fee to renew the domain www.travisdodson.com but with confusion as can only be associated with a computer, it has taken this long for all the powers to be to realize what's happened and get us up and running again. I think she said she went ahead and paid for two more years so we should be running for a long time.
Travis is progressing on his legs. Wednesday, Feb. 13th, 365 days after his injury, he stood on tall legs with knees for the first time! He said he is about 6' tall on these legs, which is about 4 inches shorter than his original height, and the plan is to raise him up a little more as his skills improve. Casey arrived at the CFI late Friday night and spent the weekend with Travis. Travis must have mentioned his dad's visit to Mark, his physical therapist, because Mark said he would be at the CFI on Saturday so they went over and Travis put on his legs. Mark took some pictures so Travis could see himself standing beside his dad - we will get one posted soon. On Saturday Travis was walking between two parallel bars for balance but by Wednesday he was using two crutches and walking around the lobby of the CFI. Isn't that exciting? And we will always be able to remember when Travis got tall legs with knees!
On Friday morning, the day after Travis' Alive Day, Lauren and I were talking about one of the phone calls we received. She said, "I know, all my friends think we've done something amazing yet we've just done what we had to. But you know, Mom, something bad has really turned into something good. Look how close our family is because of this." Again we thank the Lord, and we thank you for lifting us up before the Lord.

Steve Mraz, the Stars and Stripes reporter, emailed me today and said, "Seeing the condition Travis was in a year ago today, I never would have thought he would be leading the life he is now. Travis is not only surviving but thriving. It's an amazing story and a testament to God and the human spirit."
Several of our friends came to our house last year and I remember that we had a prayer time. Today one of the friends ask me if I remembered her prayer because one of the other friends had recently commented on it. It was that God would give Travis the will to live. Wow, has he ever. Not just to be satisfied with breathing, but to be alive and vibrant.
Yesterday Travis stood on tall legs for the first time. He said the knees have to be calibrated with his weight and gait, a rather long process. But what nice news for his mother to hear on his Alive Day! Casey flies to San Antonio tomorrow evening to spend the long weekend with Travis. If the weather is nice enough they will have a little golf/chucker fun on the course.
Haley sent us flowers with a note that quoted one of my favorite movies: "... daisys are such a happy flower." Travis was taken to lunch by the Master Sargeant and his wife and another friend. Lots of phone calls, lots of hugs and I know many prayers. So many people holding us up to the throne of God. And the Bible study lesson was just as good the second time around!
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Exactly 1 week until Feb. 14, 2008. The military has a name for the day you survive - it's called your Alive Day. As Travis' Alive day approaches I find myself thinking about it; wishing Daniel Morris had also survived - wondering how his mother is handling the anniversary, the coincidence that Travis' unit is returning to Iraq now, and the weird feeling that this year has crept by and yet flown by. I am so thankful for all the help we have received from all of you, from the Marines, from the government, from support organizations, from so many Americans. A year full of great blessings along with great tragedy.
I'm once again taking the Bible study that I feel so prepared me for all the unknown we would face with Travis' injuries. It is Daniel, Lives of Integrity Words of Prophecy by Beth Moore. In the introduction to the study she writes, "I didn't expect Daniel to become one of the most effective antidotes I've ever taken for fear. It shows God in control, absolutely sovereign, never shaken, and nothing can detour His plan for the ages." Amen. Our Bible study group meets on Thursday mornings, and I realized that next week, Feb. 14, we will study chapter 3. I've clung to that lesson for a year. It is the story of the fiery furnace and things to consider to help us come through our own fiery trial. Oh, isn't God good. Preparing me, and now reminding me of His love and His care through that preparation.
And I thank you for your love and care. I know many of you are in the midst of your own fiery trial, and I pray that you will see God as He walks through it with you.
God be with you.

Travis is now a certified scuba diver. He and the 6 other guys who took scuba diving lessons at the Center for the Intrepid, along with the diving instructors and a couple of therapists drove to Balmorhea, Tx. to do the certification part of the class. Balmorhea is a 5 1/2 hour drive west from San Antonio on Interstate 10 and a 4 1/2 hour drive east from Deming. We met at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, got situated, and ate dinner at the only restaurant in Balmorhea. On Wednesday morning the diving began in what is actually a gigantic swimming pool built by the CCC in the 1930's which is fed by an artisian spring. The crystal clear pool has areas 3, 5, 20, and 25 feet deep and a constant water temperature of 73 degrees. The weather was cold and windy, anyone standing outside wore a coat, but the water was delightful enough that I snorkled above the divers and watched the action below. There are several kinds of fish and turtles in the water and it was very entertaining to watch the divers feed them. One of the instructors had an underwater video camera and his friend, Jane, had a still camera so good photographs have been promised, along with permission to put them on the website. Diving took place all day Wednesday and again Thursday morning and we then pulled out about noon and headed home.
Travis reports that when he tried on his new socket it was "really comfortable" (that's what we're praying for!!) and he's hoping it will be a stubby or leg soon so he can get to walking.
I had a wonderful time at an amazing place with some incredible people, and just kept marveling to myself that his life is not dreary. Thank you, Lord, and thank you to those of you who are praying for him.

TRAVIS HAS HIS NEW WHEELCHAIR! And it works perfectly with his crane!! How exciting!!! The wheelchair was delivered to the Master Sergeant (the retired Marine who has "adopted" Travis and is married to the Air Force chef) and he took it to Travis today. The Master Sergeant told me it had to be put together and I had visions of tiny parts and missing pieces, but Travis said it was not a problem, just the footrests had to be bolted on and a few other minor things like that. Any of you who have put together swing-sets can imagine what I was picturing!
Tomorrow Travis takes his written test for scuba diving and then goes to Balmorhea, TX next week for a scuba diving certification trip. Balmorhea is located halfway between Ft. Stockton and Van Horn, so he is actually getting pretty close to home. It is going to be a long drive but hopefully the diving will be worth it.
My mother-in-law is doing fantasticly well. She came home last Friday and is able to move all around the house easily and sleep in her own bed. The reports show that the cancer was contained and so a full recovery is anticipated. Hurray and thank you, Lord!
We just received a note from Major Matthews. He is now Lt. Col. Matthews. Congratulations!
Keep praying, but not just for us. So many people are dealing with heartache and hard times. Especially remember LCpl Morris's family as the year anniversary nears. My friend and neighbor just lost her son-in-law in March and now her husband passed away on Tuesday. She is especially concerned for her grandsons ages 3 and 7, and the lasting effects of these two losses. Prayers for these two little boys would be appreciated.
God be with you,

Travis is enjoying the scuba diving class. He has been in full gear (I'm not sure if that is the proper term, sorry) and has worked on his bouyancy. He said he is just like anyone one else taking lessons and will be able to dive anywhere scuba diving is available. How exciting. He also reports that a new mold for a new socket on his left leg has been taken, Kirk thinks a better fit can be achieved. I'm so glad he is at the CFI where the specialists have the ability and option to try something else just because they think it will be better.
As you know, a new wheelchair has been ordered. I thought a wheelchair was a pretty standard item but I have learned that they are very specialized and just about every part of one has many options from which to choose. It not only takes a while to put it together, it takes a while for each part to arrive from the separate companies that make them. That's the long explaination to tell you that Travis' wheelchair has not yet been shipped, but we're hoping it will be soon. Ordinarily I would assume that it was the bureauocracy of the military, the VA, or an insurance company that was slowing it down, but this is a private purchase and so it just is as it is. This has been a good lesson for me and I will be a little slower in blaming delays on government red tape.
Casey's mom is doing very well after her surgery. The pathology report shows the cancer was contained and totally removed by the surgery. She is going home tomorrow (Friday). It will be several weeks before she is back to her old self but she is certainly looking great.
Thank you for your prayers and support.

Thursday Jan. 10, 2008
On Sunday morning Travis and Ana headed off to San Antonio. She will visit a few days and then fly back. Travis is continuing his regular routine with PT, etc. and has started the classroom part of the scuba diving class. Other than that, I'm not getting too much information, but I do know they played miniature golf and he was the winner.
Casey's mom's surgery has gone well. The doctor removed a section of her lung and the lymph nodes and we will have a pathology report in a few days. She will spend a couple of days in intensive care and another week in a regular hospital room. Today in her room she asked Casey, "Did you know I made the website?" We all giggled. I need to remind her that her picture was on the site when Travis took his first wheelchair ride back in Bethesda. Golly, that was a long time ago, wasn't it?
Once again we have been surrounded by friends and loved ones offering us incredible support. God bless you all. Love, Cheryl Kae, Casey, Travis, Lauren, Haley & Chris

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Can you believe that it has been 8 years since we rang in 2000 and talked about Y2K.
In the Amplified Bible, John 10:10 says, "The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)." I realize that an abundant life is full of the Lord, that it is full to overflowing with the Holy Spirit, but as Joyce Meyers so often states, the Lord wants us to enjoy our Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays... Oh, how we have seen that in Travis! One day his dad mentioned that he hasn't practiced on his stubbies the way he had planned. Travis response was, "I know, I'm having way too much fun." Monday, when he returns to the CFI, he will start a scuba diving class. Take some time with me to thank the Lord for answering our prayers that if He gave Travis life, then give it to him abundantly, for He certainly has! And please continue to pray that Travis walk with the Lord and walk comfortably on this earth.
As I posted earlier, a wheelchair has been ordered for Travis and should be delivered to his Marine friend in San Antonio Monday or Tuesday. While Travis has been home, there has been someone at each end of his driving to handle the chair. But when he is in San Antonio, he will usually drive up to the barracks by himself and thankfully the wheelchair to go with his crane should arrive and he will once again be independent.
Casey's mom is having major surgery on Wednesday to deal with a lung cancer that has been found. Once again we enter the front lines of the battle field and ask God that He be glorified through this situation and His will be done. Prayers for Helen, her husband (Pooch), and all involved would be appreciated.
We continue to praise God for the support He has given us and other wounded warriors through so many thousands of people. And may you be blessed this new year with the greatest blessing of all, a vibrant and growing relationship with the Almighty.

Update Friday, Dec. 28, 2007
Travis is having a great time with family and friends. He spends lots of time with us and his friends include him in everything they do. Michael Walsh, our friend from Annapolis, came to spend Christmas here in Deming with his parents, Mike and Barbara. He joined Casey and Travis for a round of Chucker golf and a couple of evenings playing games at our house. When he is around the fun multiplies.
Oh, I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas season. Our Christmas was so full of family, fun and food that I had to keep reminding myself that Christmas is really about so much more. The hustle and bustle can become such a distraction. Let's pause now and focus on the Lord, for His mercies are great and His love endures forever.
Happy New Year!

Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007
None of you are going to believe what has happened to Travis here in Deming. As I think I have told you, he had a small crane, called a hoist, installed in the bed of his truck. When he wheels up to his truck, he transfers into the driver's seat, and then hooks the wheelchair to the hoist and it picks up the wheelchair and puts it in the bed of the truck. When he arrives at his destination, the hoist brings the wheelchair back to the drivers door and off he goes. He has a wheelchair that he is very comfortable sitting in, but the VA loaned him a second wheelchair that is more compatible with the hoist; just the right size and weight to be lifted into the bed of the truck easily. The hoist was installed just before Travis came home, and it provided a new level of independence. Luckily he brought both wheelchairs home with him for Christmas. Well, after having this new level of independence for 7 whole days, Travis and a friend went to a drive through car wash to wash his truck. Not wanting the wheelchair to get wet and soapy and not wanting his friend to freeze in the cold weather, Travis ask his friend to set the wheelchair just outside the car wash area. They went through the wash and drove around to pick up the wheelchair... BUT IT WAS GONE! Someone stole his wheelchair and disappeared with it in less than 4 minutes! Can you imagine?
But once again we have been greatly blessed through a negative situation. We have had phone calls from people all over the state expressing their outrage, and many people have offered to give Travis wheelchairs they own or donate money to buy a replacement, some have offered to set up fund raising to purchase a new one. It has been incredible. Travis, in his rather shy way, has graciously refused the help saying "Mom, people have already helped us so much." But today he was contacted by a women at our local hospital who was able to order the exact same chair that was stolen, so a wheelchair that is compatible with the hoist has been ordered.
At this time of year, most of us would say that we have been touched by the spirit of Christmas. But for the Dodson family it is so much more than that. We have experienced love, support, encouragement, and blessings beyond our imagination since February 14
.We still stand in amazement that so many, many people - all of you who are still reading and thousands more, not from just our hometown, but from across the nation - would take time out of your lives to help us. This is the story of the Good Samaritan personified. Everyone of you has your own story, your own disappointments or heartbreaks to deal with, but you have stopped by the side of the road to help us, your neighbor. You have taught us to be more loving, kind, and generous and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
May you have the most wonderful Christmas ever, filled with love, peace, and joy.

Hello Everyone! Hope your Christmas season is wonderful and not too hectic. Needless to say, ours is great. We are enjoying Travis' visit tremendously. Haley and Chris, our newlyweds, are probably not coming here for Christmas. Like the Kindergarten children I taught, I guess I'm going to have to learn to share whether I like it or not.
Travis and Casey drove Travis' truck home for the holidays. He has a small crane in the bed which picks up his wheelchair, puts it in the bed, and then brings it back to the driver's door. He maneuvers easily and it is nice to see him so independent. He brought home his stubbies and is practicing on them. It is going to take a lot of practice and EXCELLENT balance, and so I remind you of my prayer request; that he walk with the Lord and walk comfortably on this earth. When I pray that prayer, I am always reminded that this earth is temporal and our condition here is for just a short time. Isn't it wonderful that God banished us from the Garden of Eden so we could not eat of the tree of life and have to live in this earthly state forever! Oh how gracious and merciful is our God, the Lord God Almighty. And He had already worked out a plan of redemption! What hope we have in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Travis is also working on his balance by sitting on an exercise ball and playing catch with me, working out at the local rehab center, and riding an arm bike for about an hour at a time. We have played lots of games (we are a game playing family), challenged Travis on his Wii, and watched Lauren play basketball. All in all it is very normal holiday season and that makes it especially great.
Oh, by the way, the Stars and Stripes newspaper arrived (thank you, Ann) and Travis was pictured in a big article about the Center for the Intrepid. Because it is an army hospital, the photographer assumed he was a corporal in the army, so we all teased him about that. But the article was right on about the CFI being a state of the art facility where our guys are getting the best therapy and amputee research is progressing at an amazing rate. I know the changes during Travis' lifetime are going to be great and there is no telling what new technology will be developed to help him even more.
Thank you for your cards, letters, and e-mails. Everyday I am amazed at the postmarks on the mail in my mailbox and in-box.

Just got back from dropping Casey off at the airport. He and his dad, Pooch, (yes, that is really the name he prefers, as a matter of fact that is the name he used on our wedding announcements!) flew to San Antonio this evening where they are going to spend the day with Travis and then help him drive his truck home Saturday for a long Christmas break. Pooch is really interested in Travis' rehab and this was the perfect time for him to take a tour of the CFI, check out the barracks, and see Travis in action at PT tomorrow. I think Travis is going to work on the flow rider (the wave pool activity) and probably show his grandfather how he works on the ball, climbs the wall, and tries to walk. I have given instructions for Casey to take pictures, but he doesn't always mind me.
Yesterday Travis reported that - you are NOT going to believe this!- he went 20 miles on the stationary hand bike and then immediately got in the pool and swam 1 mile. Is the boy in shape or what!?!
I'm not exactly sure where we are on the legs. I know that a stubby was made with a suction socket for his left leg, the disarticulated hip side, but the suction was not holding well and so they are making a "hip bucket"- the kind that straps on. I don't know exactly where we are in that process. He has said he is bringing home his stubbies for Christmas (the suction ones) so that he can use his Segway. Lauren and I are excited to try that Segway and it will be fun to see him standing and cute to see him so short. (Ok, don't tell my Marine I used the word "cute" to describe him and he's such a big man, I'm not sure you can ever really call him "short".)
Tonight we received an e-mail from Ann Shields, one of the nurses in the ICU in Germany. She has kept up with Travis via the website and reports that all the ICU people are cheering him on. She also reports that Travis was pictured in a recent issue of Stars and Stripes. The only thing I can think of is that it is perhaps a picture of him in Hawaii receiving his Purple Heart. Ann is sending me a copy of the paper so I'll report when I know more, but how wonderful that the wonderful people who have helped him along the way can see the results of their great care.
Do you ever just sit back in amazement of God and how He encourages and cares for you? That's where I am this evening. May His name be praised forever!
My love to all of you and may you see His hand in your life.

Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, 2007
What a wonderful thanksgiving!!!!! Our house and our hearts are full and we praise God who would care so much for a little family in Deming, New Mexico. We had a large family gathering at my brother's house and then returned home and spent the evening playing games with Travis, Ana, Haley, Chris, and Lauren. Casey and I marveled at the blessings the Lord has poured upon us and the joy He has given our family. The remodeling is perfect and Travis is finding it easy to maneuver around the house. What a life!!
The chuckers have been found, ordered and arrived. Thank you for your help. Sunday at chuch one of our friends gave us a website and phone number, I called it, and the chuckers arrived Wednesday afternoon. Of course everyone had to give it a try right after dinner. My brother lives in a rural area and it was safe chucking golf balls out into the field. Casey and Travis look forward to a round out on the golf course. Travis is talking trash, sure he can beat his dad. Casey is just as certain he cannot. What a joy to hear!
Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Take time to praise the God who cares so much for you.
Love, Cheryl Kae, Casey and our houseful of kids!

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we're excited. We have so much to be thankful for, as well you know. Travis, Haley, and Chris will all be home for Thanksgiving. Travis is flying into Phoenix, spending the night with Haley and Chris, and then riding home with Ana. I'm excited to have a houseful. It is especially exciting because our house has just been remodeled to fit Travis' needs. We now have concrete ramps leading up to the porch and a bathroom that he can use! We knocked out a wall between two small bedrooms and made one larger room that has plenty of space in which his wheelchair can move around. We are so thankful that we live in Deming and so many people have been willing to help us! We just can't say thank you enough to all our friends and neighbors and all of you who have prayed for us and supported us. You are gracious and generous, and I ask God again to multiply your blessings and pour them back upon you!
With love for you overflowing from our hearts,
Cheryl Kae, Casey, Travis, Lauren, Haley & Chris
PS When Travis went on his surfing trip, he also went to a golf course. He messed around with something called a "chucker". It looks much like a golf club and he said you use it to throw a golf ball down the fairway. There is a picture of him using it on the website, I actually thought he was frustrated and throwing a club but he said that is the chucker. Travis and Casey are wanting to find some so they can play with them during Christmas but I can't find anything about them. I've looked on the internet but only find some discs called chuckers that you toss at a board. If any of you out there know anything about the golf ball throwing chuckers, we'd appreciate you passing on the info. Just e-mail the webmaster and she will forward your message to us.
Have a great and thankful Thanksgiving!

Travis called on Saturday and ask if I was still coming to visit for the week (we had talked about it earlier). He said he would really appreciate my help with several things he had going. I felt very torn because we are in the middle of the remodeling project to make his bedroom and bathroom handicapped accessible and I might be needed to make a decision of some sort. So while I'm moaning about my dilemma, Haley calls from Phoenix and ends up offering to go help Travis. Well, you are not going to believe what I missed by not going to San Antonio! On Tuesday he was given a Segway. (You might have seen security people or Police Officers on Segways at airports or shopping malls.) First he had to be trained to use it, and because Haley was with him she was trained and got to ride one, too. They took a trip around the River Walk - can't you just picture how cool it was to see this parade of amputees riding around on Segways! Then today (Thursday) when he went to physical therapy there was security everywhere because President Bush was visiting the Center for the Intrepid!!! Haley wasn't allowed in the building (surely they would have allowed a mother in) but Travis got a good look at the President, although he didn't stand in line to actually shake his hand. And Haley was riding around the area on Travis' Segway just for something to do and she did see the President get into his car and he waved to her as he went by. I missed all this excitement and was not needed for one single decision about anything to do with the remodeling. Oh well.
Hope your week has been exciting.

Travis has walked on two stubbies! He called Wednesday and said both stubbies have been made and he has taken a few steps using a walker for support. Someone took pictures and I hope to get copies to post on the website. Yesterday he was also promoted to Corporal. In the Marines, time and achievement move you up in the ranks, so Travis has made corporal which is significant because he can now wear the blood stripe (the red stripe) on his blue dress pants. There are other privileges as well, but the stripe is very significant. So congratulations to Travis!
My prayer continues to be for Travis to walk with the Lord and walk comfortably on this earth. The Lord has been so gracious thus far and I pray that his mercy and grace continues in Travis' life.

New pictures have been posted!
You can now see Travis surfing during his California trip and snorkeling and having fun with his buddies in Hawaii. As any golfer will tell you, golf is a difficult game. Enjoy the pictures of Travis giving it a try from his chair.. I hope Lt. Steele is excited, his picture is included from the medal ceremony. And many of you have asked about Ana, she's in the slide show, too. Ethan is Joseph and Caitlin Poquiz's baby, Travis' god son. A HUGE THANK YOU goes with the pictures of the truck. I have no way of knowing who made donations to help with the purchase of his truck, no individual records were kept. But we again say "thank you" from the bottom of our hearts.
This week Travis has stood on two stubbies. He said it felt "pretty good." He did not try to walk, they were just checking to see if the sockets were comfortable. Next week I think he will try a few steps. I hope someone takes pictures. He also had an ophthalmology appointment. All the stitches have been removed from his eye and his vision seems about the same to him. He has another appointment on Friday Nov. 2 and I asked him to ask about trying a contact to improve his vision.
This weekend Travis' friend Riley is due in from Iraq so Travis is flying to Camp Pendleton to be part of the Welcome Home party. Thankfully he is coming home safe and sound and I know Travis wants to see that with his own eyes. Riley hasn't seen Travis since early March in Bethesda so I know he will be happy to see the energy and life in Travis. It will be a good reunion..
Our love to all of you and hope you enjoy the pictures,

TRAVIS IS DRIVING HIS TRUCK! He picked it up on Monday when he got back from Hawaii. He has had a piece of shrapnel removed from his hip side and will hopefully be working on two legs soon. We had such a great time in Hawaii. In the days right before we left, we heard that some overnight trainings had been scheduled during the week and Major Matthews was going to be in the Phillipines. It was impossible to change our plans and so I headed to Hawaii just a little sad that Travis wasn't going to be able to spend as much time with his buddies as he had hoped and I was not going to be able to see Major Matthews. But God gave us the desires of our hearts. The night before we left I received an email from Major Matthews saying his trip had been delayed and he would indeed be in Hawaii, and the overnight training scheduled for the middle of the week was cancelled so Travis spent every evening except Saturday with his buddies. I was so touched that God would continue to be so gracious to us. On Thursday evening my friend Cyrilee suggested that if I wanted to see the USS Arizona that I leave by hotel between 5:45 and 6:00 am. Since I was picking Travis up at the base every evening about midnight I was a little concerned about my health so I decided not to set my alarm. My eyes opened and I was wide awake at 5:45 so I hopped in the car and drove to see the Arizona. I was early enough to be in the first group and back at the hotel at 10:30, just about the time Travis was waking up. We ate, did a little shopping, took a little nap, and then I took him back to the base and I went to meet the Matthews at the Luau. Keven and Dee Matthews have a darling little 2 year old girl named Emily and the Luau was a great place for us to be able to visit and Emily to be able to play. I had so many questions for poor Major Matthews after the Luau that we had to be asked to leave the parking lot so the gates could be locked. If Travis hadn't called the second time and said, "Mom, please, would you come and get me now" we might still be at the Matthew's house talking. Saturday we caught up on sleep and I did some sight seeing of the historic sights along Waikiki then we headed home on Sunday. My prayer continues to be that Travis walk with the Lord and walk comfortably on this earth. Love, Cheryl Kae, Casey, Travis, Lauren, Haley & Travis

Hawaii is wonderful. And there is one thing I'm learning - how to get back and forth from Waikiki to the Marine Base at Kaneohi Bay! We arrived Monday at noon and were greeted by two Marintes and their families - SSgt. Tardiff and Corp. Herman. We had lunch and then drove to our hotel. By then Travis' phone was ringing continually so we headed to the base. It was a great scene watching his buddies pass the word "Dodson's here!" and come to greet him. They literally carried him up the stairs of the barracks, made sure I met everyone, and then the party began. I returned to the hotel and tried to catch up on my sleep.
Tuesday a BBQ was held at the Tardiff's house in honor of Travis. Joanna Tardiff has my vote for "Marine Wife of the Year." Spotless house, 3 darling kids, magnificent spread of food, including homemade lumpias (similar to taquitos) and a platter of 175 homemade brownies. She was a grand hostess plus a big sister to lots of Marines Travis' age. We had a great time.
Wednesday a purple heart ceremony was held for all of Golf Co. to hear the events surrounding Travis' injuries. Joseph Poquiz was recognized and awarded a medal for ignoring his own injuries and saving Travis' life. It was very moving, right in front of the Marine Memorial by the front gate.
Thursday Travis and I went snorkeling in Hanauma Bay. We enjoyed it, but I realized I don't really want to know what is down by my toes when I swim.
After our afternoon nap, Travis is back with his buddies on base and I had a delightful dinner with my high school friend, Cyrilee Farmer Billings and her husband, Tim. Tomorrow I'm joining Major Matthew and his family at one of the local luaus.(They are sweet enough to do the tourist thing with me). No doubt Travis will be back at the Marine Base, but that's the reason we're here.
I've had a couple of good chuckles about the website - during the BBQ Joanna Tardiff invited me to use their computer on Thursday because she knew I needed to write my update. And when I ask Lt. Steele if I could take his picture with Travis after the Purple Heart ceremony, he announced to everyone that he "might make the website." I also ask Ana if I could post a picture I have of she and Travis and her response was "yes, I've been wondering when I would make the website."
When I get home I'll send Courtney some updated pictures. I know we all want to see Travis surfing and now you can see him snorkeling, too. God bless you all.

Travis and I are getting ready to say "Aloha" to all his Marine buddies in Hawaii! I am going to Phoenix early Saturday to spend the weekend with Haley. I will meet Travis at the Phoenix airport Monday morning and then we will catch our flight to Hawaii. Travis' buddies are excited, too. I think they have every minute they can be with Travis all planned out. I have called Hanauma Bay and they said they are very handicapped accessible so Travis and I hope to do some snorkeling in between visits with his friends. It is really going to be great.
I asked Travis if he has any surfing pictures yet. He said yes, he has a CD of pictures but, can you believe this, he sent it to Ana first. :) Hopefully it will be our turn to see them soon.
A piece of schrapnel is working its way to the surface on Travis' little leg. The orthopedic doctors are going to make a little cut and remove it when Travis gets back from Hawaii and then he will be able to go forward with the fitting of his second leg.
My prayer for him continues to be that he walk with God and walk comfortably on this earth. We will be in Hawaii this week but I will try to find a computer to write the Thursday update. Thank you for caring, reading, and praying,

Sunday Travis flew to Pismo Beach, California for a surfing trip with an organization called Operation Comfort. I praise God and thank Him for His graciousness and for the generosity of the American people who donate their time and money to make these trips possible for our wounded warriors.
When Travis was first injured I prayed to God that His will be done. I told Him I would accept whatever His decision was about Travis' life. But I also told Him that I knew He wanted to give us our heart's desire whenever possible and that my heart's desire was to have my son live. But I also ask that if Travis' life was going to be misery, then take him now, and if the Lord was going to breathe life into him, then let it be abundant life. And today Travis, a man who lost both his legs, is surfing!
We praise you, Lord, for continuing to answer our prayers. For the life you have given Travis and for all the possibilities you are showing him. May he grow to be an Oak of Righteousness, producing fruit and displaying your glory. Continue to teach him to walk in your ways and allow him to walk comfortably in this world. In Jesus name we pray. Amen
The next update will be Thursday, Oct. 4th and we leave for Hawaii on Monday, Oct. 8th. Thank you for your prayers and your love, Cheryl Kae, Casey, Travis, Lauren, Haley & Chris

Lots of great happenings with Travis this week.
HAWAII: I received a call from a case worker stating that Travis' trip to Hawaii has been approved and the paperwork is now going through the system. She expects us to get an official call on Friday or Monday. HOW EXCITING!!
SURFING TRIP: Travis is going on a surfing trip to Pismo Beach, California. He signed up for it quite a while ago, but I hadn't mentioned it to anyone because his surgery was taking longer than I had expected to heal. He saw the surgeons on Tuesday, they do not need to see him again and released him for all activities. So he is leaving Sunday for California! He had tried a little surfing while he was stationed in Hawaii and really enjoyed it and I hope he enjoys it again. I'm not exactly sure which group is sponsoring this trip, but thanks to many generous Americans, our Wounded Warriors have the opportunity to go on many trips like this. Some of the activities are surfing, snow skiing, kayaking, deep sea fishing, big game hunting, and golfing. While playing in the Deming Invitational Golf Tournament this summer, Casey met one of the men who helps with a deer hunt scheduled for November. I hope Travis enjoys the surfing trip so much that he wants to go deer hunting. I think he will meet some incredible people and gain a lot of confidence about his ability to live with a handicap.
PHYSICAL THERAPY: Travis went swimming on Wednesday and played in the wave pool on Thursday. He has been looking forward to the water since arriving at CFI, but he couldn't get in the pools because of his colostomy. Now with the reversal healed he is good to go and enjoying himself very much.
HIS SECOND LEG: He tried on the socket for his second leg Tuesday. It was not comfortable so the prostesist is bending and stretching it. He tries it on again tomorrow (Friday).
OPHTHALMOLOGY: Two more stitches were removed from his cornea and his next appt. is October 24th. He says his vision is the same.
WHEELCHAIR: He has received his new wheelchair. In typical male fashion he said he likes it, it has wheels, and it gets him around. I think he plans to use his old chair whenever he flies because airline travel is harder on a wheelchair than you would expect.
TRUCK: Progress is being made on the truck; work orders have been placed for the adaptive equipment but the wheels of bureaucracy turn slowly. Hopefully he will be driving soon.
Travis continues to do very well. I thank God constantly for his attitude and the encouragement from all you wonderful people. Thank you for your prayers, cards, e-mails, and phone calls. I have received many e-mails through the webmaster, one from someone offering to help with our Hawaii trip and giving me her phone number. When I looked up the area code, Casey and I couldn't believe that someone from Illinois was still reading the website! Then today I received an e-mail from Major Matthews' mother-in-law encouraging us and wishing Travis continued success with his rehab. I had honestly figured the only die-hards still reading were probably our close friends and family. Oh how I wish I could meet you all. You have touched my heart in an incredible way.
Have a wonderful weekend. I'll write next Thursday, hopefully reporting on a fantastic surfing trip.

Quite a few things have happened this week.
TRAVIS MET JONI EARECKSON TADA: On Saturday I reminded Travis to check around the CFI for information about Joni's visit. He said he wasn't going to, he wasn't going to meet her. Stunned, I said, OK, you are 21 so obviously you can make these decisions. On Monday afternoon he called for another reason and added at the end of the conversation, "I met that woman." I had to ask "which woman?" He said, "Joni, I'll tell you about it later, I've got to go to PT." He did call back later Monday evening and explained that he was in his room and the Marines called from the Liaison office at the hospital and said Joni Eareckson Tada was at the Fisher House and wanted to meet him. So he went over there, and since Travis is a male I will probably never know in detail what happened or was said, but he did visit with her. She signed a devotional book for him and she said to tell his mother, Randy, and all the people at his church that she said hello.
REPORT FROM SURGERY: The surgeons continue to be pleased with his incision. Remember that they had taken out two stitches to allow it do drain, and they have now removed all the stitches and only a small opening remains.
HIS 2ND LEG: Wednesday he went to clinic, where all the therapists and clinicians meet with him to discuss as a group all plans and progress. Because Travis has a disarticulated hip, which means he has no femor, on the left side it has been planned to make a casing which will strap around his waist and hips to provide support for the leg. Travis has never been excited about that, but resigned himself to what had to be. During clinic, it was discussed that Travis has a lot of control over movement in his residual tissue and so they are going to try a regular leg which means it will suction on to his little residual leg instead of being strapped on. He is very excited and I told him we would certainly pray that he have enough strength in that little leg to move the prosthetic leg and enough tissue to keep it on. His little leg will be cast next week and then the leg made.
NEW WHEELCHAIR: His new wheelchair is in and our friend Kyle Stevens is going to take Travis to the VA on Friday afternoon to pick it up. They will also check on the progess of the paperwork for the truck.
HAWAII: When Travis' unit returned from Iraq, those Wounded in Action were invited to Hawaii to welcome their buddies home. Because Travis was bedridden at the time in Palo Alto, we had to decline the invitation. We have now had several phone calls from Marines in Hawaii telling us they are trying to arrange for Travis to go to Hawaii in October to see his company between trainings and before they deploy for Iraq in January. And he's going to take his mother with him!!
I continue to be amazed at how God is working in our lives, especially the hope that Travis' short leg will accept a regular prosthetic leg. Please continue to help me pray that Travis will walk again, and walk comfortably. And that great wisdom will be given to the prosthetists and great strength will continue to be given to Travis.
We praise you, Lord, for all you have already done; that Travis met your servant, Joni, and that you are taking care of all his needs. We thank you for the legs which you are about to give him and the independence that you are providing. May You be glorified forever and ever through this situation. Amen.

Travis had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. He flew to Tucson to see Ana and she then brought him to Deming on Friday. He saw his grandparents and watched Lauren play volleyball, then went he and Ana went to Las Cruces (the next town) to spend the rest of the weekend with friends. We picked him up on Monday afternoon and took him to the airport in El Paso as Ana headed back to Tucson. The apartment he stayed in while in Las Cruces is a townhouse style apartment. When we arrived around noon on Monday he was taking a shower. I didn't think much of it until one of his friends carried him downstairs because the bathroom is on the 2nd floor. Another friend was right behind with his wheelchair. Travis said later, "My friends take such good care of me." I wonder, if Jesus were in town, would they carry Travis to the roof and let him down? (Mark 2:1-5) I was filled with love for his friends as I watched them all love Travis with such care and yet treat him just like they always did, even doing some wrestling. He was proud of the fact that he kicked one of the guys in the face with his little leg.
Tuesday morning Travis was seen by the surgeons. His incision showed signs of just starting to be infected so they opened up two stitches right in the center and stuffed in a little gauze do draw out the infection. He changes the gauze twice a day and sees the doctors on Friday morning.
Travis has called the place where the driving adaptations will be done and of course there is more paperwork to do. Since I am not there to run errands, he is at the mercy of a fax machine. One carbon copy is not faxing well so he is going to have to mail it. But no doubt it will all be done soon.
I have seen my doctors and talked with my friend, Kelly, who is a doctor in Dallas. All have said just keep taking those afternoon naps and relaxing and I will recover. Haley is coming to visit this weekend so the mama bird will enjoy having her little chick home.
Joni Eareckson Tada is in San Antonio Sunday evening at Max Lucado's church and Monday afternoon at the Fisher Houses and Center for the Intrepid. I know God has something in mind so help me pray that Travis doesn't miss her, or Him.
Thank you for your love and prayers. I can't believe the friends in town who have commented on the website, still reading and caring. I am filled with love for you all, too, because you have carried my entire family to the feet of Jesus.

Travis passed his driving test today, although he said it is much more difficult to drive with hand controls than you would think. Kerry, the instructor, had him in a van for a hour, driving around parking lots and on San Antonio freeways. But he did pass and now it is legal to have hand controls installed in his new truck so I'm sure that will be a priority upon his return to San Antonio.
Tonight he is safely in Tucson with Ana and I am safely home with Casey and Lauren. Tomorrow will be my first day to send Casey and Lauren off to school while I stay home. Casey is already whining about it!
I'll write the next update Thursday, Sept. 6. Look for it to be posted Friday, Sept. 7.

General Surgery continues to be pleased with the progress of the incision and stiched it up today. They will see him first thing Tuesday morning to access it after the Labor Day Weekend. He took a long nap today and does not see to be in any pain this evening.. Tomorrow morning at 9:00 he takes the on-road driving test for his hand control certificate and can then have his truck taken for the hand controls to be put in. I ran into Kirk the prostisist (makes the legs) and he said as soon as Travis is able he will cast and make the second stubby. I made him promise to take another picture! I know you will all cheer with us when Travis is standing on two legs, even if they are short.
We both fly out tomorrow afternoon. Travis to visit his friends and Ana for the weekend and me to return home. I'm thrilled to be going home but it is bittersweet to leave Travis. Thankfully he is well enough for me to leave him, but after 6 1/2 months it is hard. I'm looking forward to finally visiting Haley and Chris in Phoenix and seeing their apartment and Lauren plays volleyball Thursday night, marches in the band Friday night, and plays volleyball again on Saturday. I'm going to have to work hard to get my afternoon naps in! :-)
PRAYER REQUESTS: Prayer requests are Travis's stamina in his wheelchair and my readjustment back home (and Casey and Lauren's adjustment to having me home).
FUTURE UPDATES: I'll write an update tomorrow (THURSDAY, AUG. 30, 2007) and let you know the outcome of the driving test. After that, my next posting will be for THURSDAY, SEPT. 6, 2007 and Courtney will post it on Friday morning. I will try to send Courtney a posting every Thursday evening for her to post on Friday morning. That way those of you who need to use your work computer can check the website during lunch on Friday and those of you who read it at home can check it over the weekend.

Travis and I went to the grocery store in his truck today, and as we were driving he talked about his vision. He said he has good peripheral vision out of his bad eye, and he has pretty good distance vision. He can read bill boards pretty well and although he can't read the print on road signs, he can see the signs, and he has no problem seeing cars. He ended by saying, "God gave me my vision back, didn't He."
Praise God for the much improved vision and that Travis could see God's hand in it!

Travis had a follow-up at general surgery today and the doctors are really pleased with how well he is healing. His wound, which I had referred to as a gaping hole, is now much shallower in depth and the sides have closed in quite a lot so it is definitely smaller than it was and all the tissue is "beefy red" showing that any infection that might still be there is on the run. That's probably more information than many of you wanted, but I think it is fascinating and I'm glad I'm the parent who has been with Travis through all this medical wonder.
Thank you for your prayers and your concern.

From Travis:
I would like to thank all the people who have been involved with or donated to my truck fund. It has been such a blessing to have you give me the gift of independence by helping me purchase my new truck. I would like to add a special thanks to Shane Shores who organized and set up the account along with many fund raisers. Thank you so much Shane. It is a wonderful gift you have given me and I can't wait to drive it home and let everyone see it.
Again, thank you so much to all of you who have donated. The truck is great!
With love and many thanks,
Travis
From Cheryl Kae
TRAVIS HAS HIS NEW TRUCK! It is simply unbelievable to me what you have done for Travis. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Before he bought his truck, we were making plans for my leaving and I reminded him of the friends we have in San Antonio who would be glad to pick him up and take him where he needed to go. His reply to me was, "Mom, I don't want to have to ask someone to take me to the store and stuff. That's just not what I want, I don't want to bother people." And now, because of your wonderful generosity he doesn't have to, he once again feels capable and strong. Wednesday, Aug. 29 Travis will have his driver's evaluation at the VA for the use of hand controls and then the hand controls will then be installed. I can't thank you enough for how you have helped Travis emotionally.
May God bless you all many times over!!

The doctors were very pleased with Travis's improvement. His wound looked better and they are happy with his activity level. They are continuing with the wound-vac therapy and we see them again on Friday and then the next Tuesday.
Not much else to report, "talk" to you again tomorrow evening.

Travis is moving much more today. He went to PT at 2:00 and did some light arm bike and sat up by himself several times on his chaise, so those abs. are feeling better! He has an appt. tomorrow with the surgery team and I know Dr. Martin will be pleased.

We've had a great day! Travis said he was able to turn on his side for part of the night. That is positive for two reasons: he was able to endure the pain to turn on his side and it gave a little relief to the pressure points on which he has been laying. I've ask him if he feels any pressure points starting to be sore and he has said no, but changing positions is great. He is still talking about going to PT on Monday and using the arm bike lightly for 15-20 min. He must be feeling better.
Two of my oldest and dearest friends came to see us today. Rick and Debbie Reiss are in San Antonio visiting their daughter and son-in-law and all 4 of them dropped by. We had a great time catching up and remembering the fun we had together growing up. Their son-in-law, Chris, is in the Army Reserves and spent time in Iraq so we had that connection, too. It was wonderful.
My great day really started at church with a message that spoke right to me. Before Travis was injured, our Sunday School class had studied the book of Daniel using Beth Moore's study of Daniel. Her insight and teaching on Daniel 3 concerning Shadrach, Meshack, Abednego and the fiery furnace is one of the lessons I have clung to during this ordeal. I feel God had us do that study just to help prepare Casey and me for the fire we would have to help Travis walk through. Today at church the chaplain preached on faith, and the fiery furnace was one of his examples. He said, "True faith...genuine faith...requires that we respond in hope and confidence that God is working on our behalf even when the difficulties we are facing in life appear to deny it. We can't help but believe that God has a purpose in allowing the pain and pressure we have to endure." In Daniel 3, after the king threatens to throw Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego into the fiery furnace because they would not bow down to his idol, they say "The God we serve is able to save us from (the burning fiery furnace), and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O King, that we will not serve your god or worship your image of gold you have set up." (Daniel 3:17-18, emphasis mine) My (hopefully) true faith, genuine faith says that I trust Him enough to believe He is working on our behalf and to accomplish His purposes in the world even if He chooses to not "fix" our immediate problems.
I pray that God refine all our faith, yours and mine, to make it true and genuine and help our unbelief. (Mark 9:24)

We spent the day (the part we were awake, anyway) watching movies. I am feeling better than I have in a very long, although I wasn't aware that I was feeling poorly. I think the rest is good for me so, who knows, maybe God slowed Travis down so that I would slow down. Travis is talking about reporting to PT on Monday, just to check in. I'll let you know if he does. He is feeling good, just can't use those abdominal muscles and no doubt they are going to start feeling better soon, too.
Thank you for you concern and your prayers.

The doctors seem a little concerned about Travis and his pain level from surgery and his lack of movement, but I think they also don't know how a young man with no legs is supposed to feel when he has to use his abdominal muscles for every little movement he makes. Travis is not running a fever and all other signs of problems are negative. A "wound vac" has been inserted into the skin where the surgery was done to help stimulate tissue growth. A wound vac was used on his legs while he was at Bethesda. It is, essentially, a sponge inserted into the skin area of the open wound to which a suction tube is attached. The doctors said it is amazing technology which will help the area rid itself of infection and grow new cells at a faster rate. We do back to the clinic on Tuesday.
The rain yesterday was amazing. We couldn't believe how hard it was and how long it lasted. I was in the barracks and the computer was in the Guest House and I wasn't willing to get soaked. Hope no one minded.
I'm sure you have already joined me in praying for God's healing hand to touch Travis and I thank you for that.

I'm becoming a believer in afternoon naps, I feel so much better when I take one. Today Travis went to General Surgery to have his incision looked at. I had him go a day early because I wasn't sure everything was ok. It turns out his incision was infected so Dr. Martin opened part of it up and let it drain. He packed it with some type of gauze, showed Travis how to change the packing twice a day, and told Travis to come to the surgery clinic Thurs., Fri., and Monday to have it checked. It reminded me of the "power washings" on his legs while he was at Bethesda because Dr. Martin also told him to use the hand-held shower head to wash out the dead and infected tissue. Travis and I returned to the barracks, ate lunch, and both took a very refreshing nap. The naps reminded me of a card my sister-in-law gave my father-in-law a few years ago; "It's your birthday, celebrate, go wild... take TWO naps today!" Maybe that's how I'll celebrate my retirement.
Hope you can be refreshed in some way today,

Going to the VA was physically harder than Travis and I thought it would be. Without legs, all of his movement involves his abdominal muscles even more, so transfering back and forth to the car was quite difficult. We did meet with the woman in charge of driver certification and got a lot of information about the process of buying a vehicle and the VA's involvement with that process. Travis did not do the actual driving part today, he will call her when he is feeling better and schedule it, but he can now purchase a vehicle whenever he is ready and the adaptive equipment will be put on as soon as he takes the test. Travis and I both talked about how much better we felt on the days we just sat around his room, so that is what we are focusing on for tomorrow. He is supposed to go to "clinic" (a meeting with all the members of his team) tomorrow at the CFI, but we'll see how he feels tomorrow, then he has a follow-up with surgery on Thursday. His discharge instructions from the hospital said no heavy lifting for 4 weeks so he is going to be down for a while.
Love to all of you,

Hmm, this surgery was more than I expected. Travis is still on his chaise lounge but could move a little bit better than yesterday. He has an appointment at the VA tomorrow to do the paperwork for his driving certificate. He said he'll decide tomorrow morning whether or not he wants to try to transfer into the car to drive over there. Not much else to report, I'll let you know about the driving test in tomorrow's update.

Travis is still lounging on his chaise, alternating between sleep and watching TV. Part of the sleeping is, of course, the pain medications, but I'm sure it is a relief for him to sleep and not use his abs.
I have a God story to share, I hope I can write it and make it understandable to all of you. In early March our good friend, Randy Bruggink, contacted Joni Eareckson Tada, Christian author and advocate for the disabled, through her website. The summer she graduated from high school she broke her neck in a diving accident and as a result has been a quadriplegic for about 40 years. Randy said he received an automated e-mail from her foundation (Joni and Friends) days later that said Joni would be responding to his e-mail soon but nothing came. He finally received a package from her dated July 30 and she apologized for not responding sooner, but explained that her foundation had moved to a new office and his e-mail had gotten lost in the move. When it was found, she sent the package to Randy which included her new book, a memoir of her life with a personal note written in the front to Travis, a letter to Randy, and also a letter to Travis thanking him for his service and letting him know she understands something of his situation and encouraging him in his life. The God part is, as I told Randy the day he gave me the package for Travis, if Travis had received this in March, she would just be another "celebrity" thanking him for his service, BUT SHE IS COMING TO SAN ANTONIO IN SEPTEMBER AND, IF I UNDERSTAND CORRECTLY, INCLUDING THE CENTER FOR THE INTREPID IN HER SCHEDULE! I hope that Travis hears her speak, that he hears God speak through her, and that perhaps they will even meet face to face, chair to chair.
Isn't it fun to watch God at work? He is at work in your life, too. I'll join you in prayer that He will open your eyes to see the miracles.

Travis was released from the hospital just before lunch. His abdominal muscles are very sore and so it was quite painful for him to try to transfer from the bed to his wheelchair, and it was very painful for his mother to watch. But he did it, and I wheeled him (he let me push) to the barracks. He is now lying on his chaise and visiting with his friend and old roommate Roy Hyde. I did a Sonic run for supper and am now reading a book in my room at the Guest House (an army hotel set up for families). When Roy leaves, I'll go back to the barracks and probably camp out on the bed because Travis most probably won't move from the chaise. I don't know how long his abs will be sore, but he is excused from PT for 2 weeks to allow them to heal. I plan to help Travis get his driving certificate while I'm here and he has some free time. Look out truck, here we come, I hope.
Have a great day tomorrow; It's the Lord's day, I hope you encounter Him in some way.

Travis is recovering well from his surgery. He ate macaroni salad and mashed potatoes for lunch and then a cheeseburger and french fries for dinner! The doctors offered to release him today but he opted for tomorrow. It is quite painful for him to move so I am glad he chose tomorrow so that the nurses could be in charge instead of me. Not much else going on, I've read and he has watched TV in between snoozes.
Thanks again for your prayers and your concern.

Travis is doing well. One of the resident surgeons remarked today that Dr. Martin said this was his easiest colostomy reversal ever. Hopefully the recovery will be the easiest ever, also. Travis is hungry, he can't take in ANYTHING by mouth until his system "wakes up," hopefully that will be soon. He had several visitors today one of whom was Roy Hyde, his roommate from his semester at NMMI. Roy is in town for a week and said he will be by to visit Travis most everyday. It is a wonderful diversion of hunger pangs!
I try to yield to God's sovereignty always, but it is just so great when He so obviously answers prayers which a huge "YES!" Thank you for your prayers.

Travis's surgery went well! Dr. Martin spoke with me about 3:00 San Antonio time and reported that everything went textbook perfect during the surgery. He was able reattach the two pieces of intestine and drop them back into the abdomin with no problems. I told the dctor I had been praying that just as God had knit Travis together in my womb, to use Dr. Martin to knit together Travis's intestine to perfect working conditin. Dr. Martin helped me finish the sentence and then said, "That is exactly what happened." He expects to keep Travis in the hospital just a couple of days and then allow him to go to my room with me. I am at the Powless Guest House, a military hotel right by the Fisher House and the Center for the Intrepid. It does not have a kitchen, but my room does have a microwave and refrigerator, AND maid service! The barracks, which is just across the street, has a kitchen we can use so we have a very nice setup.
Here is Travis's address:
BAMC Mailroom
LCpl Dodson, Travis C.
3851 Roger Brooke Dr. Dept. 31
Fort Sam Houston, TX 78234-6200
I can't promise how frequently he will check his box but when I return home I will try to remind him to check it a couple of times a week.
Thank you for your prayers, God was listening and graciously answered "Yes"!

Hello everyone! I'm back in San Antonio, I arrived Monday night at 11:30 p.m. Travis was waiting up for me and we had a good visit before we finally gave in to being sleepy.
Monday's news: Travis stood on his right "stubby" leg!!! His right thigh sits down in a socket the size of his thigh and a mechanical ankle is attached to the socket and then a foot attached to the ankle. (picture a leg without a knee and shin) He said he stood with a little short walker and "walked" around much like we would if we had sprained our ankle and only used one leg and a walker. We were, of course, disappointed that we missed seeing it.
Tuesday morning: One of the therapists took a picture of Travis on his his stubby yesterday and Travis brought it to me today! I'll see if someone can scan it for me and I'll send it to Courtney our web master.
Tuesday afternoon: Travis was admitted into the hospital right at lunch time and they brought him his lunch tray of juice and jello. Because he is having surgery on his lower intestines he has to be on a clear liquid diet. He is so hungry! And his surgery is after lunch tomorrow (Wednesday) so it's going to be a tough morning. I told him to sleep in, but he is in the spital so that will be quite difficult. One thing I've realized is that when Travis is doing well I hold up well but when he is miserable I have a much harder time being strong.
Our specific prayer request is that the Dr. won't have to open up his midline but can make a small incision to "put him back together" so that he can quickly return to his rehab regimen. Please pray that Travis and I will be able to use this downtime wisely.

Travis's outpatient procedure went well today. He reported to the hospital at 6:00 am but they did not take him back until 12:00 noon and he was in the recovery room about 3:00. I received a phone call from his doctor at 3:00 San Antonio time. He said things had gone well but Travis's phone was not working and Travis was concerned about us, so the doctor told Travis he would call us and let us know that everything was going well. Travis has a high school friend named Manny who is stationed in Corpus Christi and drove to San Antonio today to be with Travis. It was a relief to me when I spoke to Manny and he said the hospital was going to release Travis to him and he would be with Travis at the barracks tonight.
Travis's other surgery has been rescheduled for this Wednesday! The cleaning out of my room has gone really fast, I just have a little tiny bit more to do on Monday morning, and then Monday evening I will fly back to San Antonio. Travis will be admitted into the hospital on Tuesday morning so they can prep him for the surgery. A room at the Fisher House has been arranged and I expect to be there about 2 weeks. After this whirlwind trip back home to clean out my room, I'm looking forward to resting while Travis recoups in the hospital.
I saw my family doctor on Thursday morning and he said I am definitely improving, it is just going to take a little time. That's why I retired. Now with my room done I think I can mentally rest, too.
My brother pointed out that I have not reported on Travis's last ophthamology appointment. His vision with the pinhole had improved slightly from 20/70 to 20/60. She removed 2 more stitches and will remove the rest in 1 more month and then we can try the contact to smooth the surface of the eye. If the surface of the eye becomes smooth, light might refract correctly through it. Wouldn't that be great?
I'm excited Travis's surgeries have ended up so close together. Let's get them over with and then on to driving and walking!
Thank you for your notes and prayers. We love you all! Love, Cheryl Kae, Travis, Casey, and Lauren

We arrived home this evening, when we left Travis he was content. He was planning on getting together with one of his buddies tonight to hang out. The next update will be Friday after his procedure.

Travis enjoyed his first night in the barracks. Kyle, Tiffany, and Casey picked up the loveseat and chaise today at noon so now his living room area is very comfortable. We are checked out of the Fisher House, ready to leave tomorrow morning (Wednesday) at 7:00am. Part of the check-out was getting Travis a mail box at the barracks, but we realized after the office closed that the mail box assigned to him is on the very top row. He will have to go to the mail room at the hospital to change it, and knowing Travis, it will be a while before he does that. So in the meantime, if you HAVE to send something to Travis, it would be best to send it to our Deming address and we will forward it as soon as he has a new box number. Our Deming address is:
Casey and Cheryl Kae Dodson
1409 Socorro St.
Deming, NM 88030
As soon as we have a good address for Travis we will post it on the website.
Friday he is having an outpatient procedure done to help clear up that infection. If you have time, please lift him and all involved up in prayer. It is hard for me not to be here, but I have to get my classroom cleaned out before a new teacher can move into it! The doctor assured me that they will keep Travis in the recovery room until they are positive he will be okay by himself. Of course, we know God will be with him every moment.
Love to you all,
Cheryl Kae, Travis, and Casey

Travis is spending the night in the barracks tonight! Most of our day was spent at the hospital going from office to office and waiting to do the paper work to have Travis ready for the small procedure on Friday to take care of that nagging infection. At 4:00 we were finally ready to go to the barracks and have Travis assigned to a room. It didn't take long to move his stuff and then we had the fun of getting his room organized. It looks great, really homey and comfortable. Casey did tell me to quit using the word "cute" because he didn't think that was Travis's goal for his room. Kyle and Tiffany Stevens brought BBQ over for supper and then helped with the move. We purchased a love seat and chaise lounge for Travis's room and tomorrow Kyle is meeting us at the store and hauling them to the barracks in his truck. I had a lot of fun working in his room and I think he is pleased with the outcome.
Casey and I are running a few more errands tomorrow, picking up a few odds and ends, and then we hope to drive home on Wednesday.

Well, Max Lucado speaks as well as he writes, actually, he speaks just like he writes. We really enjoyed his message today about what to expect in Heaven (his last point being that we were sure to laugh when we thought back to his inadequate description). We took quite a while leaving the sanctuary and as we strolled down the hall we realized that he was talking to people who had formed a line to greet him. Watching him, I was amazed at how calm and relaxed he was; he never seemed to hurry even though the line was growing. A family with children was right ahead of us, and he bent down and let the children tell him all about the picture they drew for him. It was a joy to watch. My comments were on the book I had just read about rejoicing in EVERY day the Lord has made, even the one when you receive a call from Iraq. I complimented his book, told him how it had impacted me, and thanked him for writing it. I was ready to allow the next person their time with him, but he kept pulling me back, wanting to know specifics, and then more details, and then made sure I met the women in charge of their military outreach program. I was astonished.
My cousin, Dana, and I went into the little bookstore and looked around. She hugged a woman and chatted just a second and walked out with a business card to order merchandise. I walked up to the same lady and asked if I could have the same card she just gave my cousin, to which she asked me if I was Travis's mother. I stared at her blankly, thinking that although I do have a son named Travis, she couldn't possibly know that and must have me confused with someone else. But I think "yes" must have come hesitantly out of my mouth because she then said she had been praying for him since February. She is a BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) small group leader and Dana is in her small group and she knew Travis is in San Antonio, so when I said "my cousin" it all clicked with her.
It is so neat to meet some of the people who have helped us so much. I really wish I could meet you all. Thank you for your prayers, thank you for your encouragement, thank you for your support.
Tomorrow (Monday) Travis is suppose to move into the barracks. We're going over at 8:00am to check on the orders and see there is anything else we need to do to facilitate the move. He has a couple of appointments, one of which is ophthamology and another is driving simulation. I'll keep you updated.

Friday was a pretty exciting day at CFI. First and most importantly, the source of the aggravating infection has been found and the correct medicine started! (Isn't it just too cool when God answers a prayer so quickly and so obviously!) And right after that good news, Travis went to Occupational Therapy for his ADL (activities of daily living) evaluation to move into the barracks and he passed with flying colors. We mentioned that he was very interested in buying a vehicle so he was sent to the driving simulator right after the ADL evaluation. He passed the CFI driving program and will now be sent to the more formal program at the VA hospital. It is expected to take 2-3 to set up the appointments, take the course, and then take a behind the wheel test in an actual vehicle. When he passes the behind the wheel test he will be given a certificate and it is my understanding that he can then be licensed and so we can buy a vehicle. We then went out to eat with my cousin, Dana, and her family and played a round of putt-putt. We got back to the Fisher House around midnight and my brain forgot all about writing an update. I appologize.
Saturday was back to the guy/truck thing. Casey wanted to make sure Travis saw all the trucks that every company made for some real comparison shopping. I took a book and sat in the van while they checked them all out. (I didn't even make any color comments.) And then we stopped and bought the sheets, towels, comforters, etc. that Travis needs for his room. Supposedly he will move into the barracks on Monday! How exciting!
Tomorrow (Sunday) we are meeting my cousin, Dana, at Max Lucado's church. Hope you have a great Sunday, too.

Travis and Casey went to check out trucks today. (I tagged along and added the very valuable female insight as to which color would show the most dirt in our desert climate). While Haley was in town, Travis had taken us to a dealership which had been recommended by some of the other guys here at the CFI. One truck had really impressed him. Today he wanted to show it to his dad but the truck had been sold. The salesman stated that another truck like it had been ordered and they were expecting it any day. After looking at some others, Travis and Casey decided to take me out for lunch (to thank me for my color opinion, I think) and while we were waiting for a table the salesman called and said the other truck had just been delivered to the dealership. The truck is being held in Travis' name to give him a little time to think. But the real point of me telling this story is that this dealership has a man whose position is titled "mobility specialist." He talked with Travis, watched him transfer into the truck, and discussed options for his wheelchair. They talked about now and they talked about in a few years. It was obvious that this man knew what he was doing. He ended up sharing his story with me; he was in the military when his first child was born significantly handicapped, a son that shouldn't have seen his first birthday has now seen 20. He is a father who shares what he's learned with others who have mobility issues. His clients run the gamut from Lou Gehrig's, Ms, and quadriplegics, to Wounded in Action. He talked about voice controls, hand controls, and seating options. He not only understands the medical side, but the military/VA side as well. All I could think of was here is an example of God working "all things together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to his purposes" (Romans 8:28). I left the dealership very blessed, thanking God for his providence, and not even caring that Travis chose a black truck.
Great is His faithfulness.

Golly, yesterday I was so wrapped up in the college attitude, Casey coming, and the book I had just read that I forgot to comment on my health and our visitors. In Deming we live across the street from our pastor and his family. Keath and Murray Baskett took time to come visit us during a quick trip to San Antonio to see her family. They came bearing gifts of cookies! Yeah! Some homemade from one of the Sunday School classes at church (thanks, Jo!) and some of Travis's favorite Girls Scout cookies. We enjoyed the visit.
My health is much better, but not totally back to normal. Once in a while I still feel a pull on my side when I take a deep breath. But now Casey is here to take care of us, so I can keep relaxing.
Not much going on with Travis, he's just really glad to see Casey.

Tonight has the feeling of sending Travis off to college. I'm getting ready to return home, and I've decided to look at leaving Travis just as I would if I were dropping him off at college. We have looked at the barracks (dorm) and have some ideas of what he needs to purchase to make his room comfortable. He will have a refrigerator and microwave, and can go to the cafeteria in the hospital, across the parking lot, when he prefers. Tonight he went to the Dallas Cowboys' Training Camp with a bunch of the guys. And of course he'll spend a lot of his time in "class" learning to walk, but learning about life, too. Now doesn't that have a college feel?
Casey is flying into San Antonio Wednesday afternoon about 2:30. He wants to spend some time with Travis before school starts. Our plan is to drive home Tuesday. We will have gone through this round of follow-up appts. with Travis and I feel certain we will be pleased with his progess. Today Travis had a CT scan searching for the cause of an aggravating little infection. Please pray that the cause and cure can both be found.
I've just finished studying Max Lucado's new book Everyday Deserves A Chance. If you are looking for an easy to read book with profound thoughts, I highly recommend it. I have called a couple of friends just to read them his discussion of the phrase "take up your cross."
I'm going to go to bed praying for you each to find your cross to bear. (That is a positive prayer to pray for you, just ask Max! )

Travis is checking in with most of his doctors this week and it's great to know he is still on track and nothing is sneaking up on us. His blood pressure is perfect and his heart rate is within the normal range and still going down, which is great news. As was thought, the blood pressure and heart rate were related to pain and pain medication so as his pain has faded so has his need for pain medication and so he is of course in better health all the way around! He has a busy morning tomorrow and I have a follow-up on my health problems. Hopefully my news will be as good as his.

Drove Haley to the airport at 10:30, she arrived in Phoenix for an afternoon and evening with Chris. Travis and I hung out at the Fisher House. My sister brought us frozen homemade enchiladas when she came last week and another family is here from El Paso and the mom made spanish rice and beans, so we have been feasting on our style of Mexican food. DELICIOUS! Travis has several follow up appts. this week at the hospital, checking his eyes and medications, etc. I'll report anything of interest.

Today Brandon, an amputee here at CFI, invited us to see his room. He lives in the barracks, which is just across the street from the Fisher House and CFI. He has a suite; one room has a twin bed and he has the other room set up as a living room with a small couch, recliner, and tv along with a medium sized refrigerator and microwave. It was a very nice set up actually. I suppose Travis will be assigned something like it.
The rest of the day we spent lounging around the Fisher House. Remember, that was my job while Haley is here. She leaves tomorrow at 10:00 so I guess my days of leisure are over. But I'm feeling much better, I'm able to take much deeper breaths with very little or no pain. It has been wonderful to have Haley here with us, we've giggled and teased a lot.
Hope you have a great day.

Thank you for all the messages of concern and good wishes for my health. Today I wrote a letter to my school district announcing that I would like to retire. My family and I all agree that I need to take it a little easy for a while and not add the complication of a kindergarten class to my life at this time. My principal and district office were very kind and said they completely understand with all that is going on in the Dodson family right now.
Friday morning is "Sports Day" at CFI. This week was volleyball. The guys all sit on the floor with a low net between the teams and have a lively game of volleyball. It started out a little slow, but soon young men were slamming it down or faking with a little dink and adding spin to their serves. "Mandatory Fun" is going to have to renamed because for the second week in a row he has had a great time. This time was to lDave and Busters for lunch and then arcade games. You know how guys are, they all compete to see who can win the most tickets. Travis is sure he won but they don't really count to see. And then this evening Haley, Travis and I played a variety of games of which I won a big, fat zero, but as always it's fun just having fun with your kids.
Hope you have a great weekend,

Hello! I'm back! When the doctors looked at my chest x-ray, they thought I had fluid on my lungs. But after looking at the CT scan, they realized I had pleuracy (not sure if that is spelled correctly). Haley arrived at noon on Tuesday to take care of me and help Travis if he needed help. I have promised my family I will rest, rest, rest, and take it easy when I'm not resting. Haley is staying until Saturday or Sunday and I might stay in my pajamas until she leaves. (She says that is the idea.) Thank you for your prayers and concern. As the doctors explained what would most likely cause fluid on the lungs, I was very concerned myself and VERY glad when it turned out to be just inflamation between the chest wall and the lungs.
Travis had his old wheelchair revamped today and no longer has weights on the front. Haley reports that it is much easier to put in the car now. I thought the pain in my side when I breathed was a pulled muscle from handling Travis' wheelchair so the poor boy got blamed when it wasn't even his fault.
He tried on his new socket for his longer leg and it fit much better than the first one. He said the next time he puts it on it will have a foot on the bottom. I'll try to be there with my camera! I'm not sure when the mold will be made to start the other leg, but I'm sure it is soon.
May I ask you to be in prayer for a wonderful Deming family who lost a son this week? Roy Hartman, a delightful young 8th grader who I had as a kindergartener, was cleaning a pistol when it went off and he was killed. I know that Deming is holding them close and lifting them before the Lord, but will the rest of you please add Don, Cheryl, older brother Matthew, and the rest of the Hartman family to your prayer list. May they all be comforted, held in the Lord's arms, and reassured of the gift of everlasting life.
Love, Cheryl Kae, Travis, and Haley for a few more days.

Today Travis tried on his socket for his prosthetic and it was still notquite right so they are going to start over and make another one.
Cheryl Kae could use some prayer. After having trouble breathing and not feeling well for several weeks, she went in to see the doctor. She was then admitted to the hospital due to some fluid in her lungs. We will try to keep you updated on her health as well as Travis'. Please continue to pray for the entire Dodson family, as Casey may be traveling to San Antonio tomorrow. Cheryl Kae writes the updates, and, in an effort to give her time to rest and heal there may be some days without an update.
Thank you for your prayers,
The Dodson Family

All my family left today, I took Martin and Jacquie to the airport this morning and Rhonda and Russell drove off early.
Travis's friend Sabre Parnell and her cousin Skye are in San Antonio. They came by and picked Travis up about 3:00 and headed to the River Walk. It's now 10:00 and they must be having fun.
Hope you had fun sometime today, too.

We played cards with my brother and his wife most of the afternoon. Spades was the game of choice, and Travis won. Then we attended my cousin's daughter's wedding. It was beautiful and she was a lovely bride. As an American, I was very proud of the number of people who came and introduced themselves to Travis. They thanked him and offered him any help he might need. As a mother, I was very proud of the way Travis responded to them with grace and poise.
God bless you all.

Mandatory fun was fun. It was Laser Tag and Papa John's pizza. Thirteen guys went, most in wheelchairs and others on prosthetic legs. Travis took 2nd in the first round and 1st in the second round. He said he had a great time.
My brother, Martin, and his wife, Jacquie, have arrived in town along with Rhonda's husband, Russell, for my cousin's daughter's wedding. We met at a friend's house last night and ate, laughed, and played cards. We had a great time there, too.
With much love,

Travis said PT was really good this morning. He got on the big green ball all by himself and sat on it alone for quite a while. He did admit to falling off a couple of times, but got back on and kept balancing. He also sat on a padded blue cylinder, sometimes straddling it and sometimes sitting forward. He said his balance is getting good.
My sister, Rhonda, and our friend, Angie, dropped in around noon so we took them to the PX. Travis bought a dress shirt to wear to my cousin's daughter's wedding because he has decided the dress blues jacket is too hot. It is definitely hot here in San Antonio now that it has quit raining.
Steve and Shirley Stevenson invited Travis to the American Legion from 3:30-5:30. A group of veterans meet there every Thursday for Happy Hour. One of the ladies is the first woman general in the Air Force. Guessing her age to be 85, Travis said, "Mom, she stayed with me beer for beer." I think back in the days that she was working on promotions and a woman probably had to be one of the guys. Anyway, she has offered to pay for Travis a lifetime membership in the American Legion. There are wonderful people everywhere!
We had dinner at Rhonda's friend's house (Kima and Jim) and then Travis challenged us to a round of Putt-Putt. I'm not sure who won, but I know it wasn't me.
Last night Travis said he had one of his best nights ever, sleeping all night long, We're looking forward to another good night's sleep tonight.
Tomorrow is "mandatory fun", I'll let you know how it goes. haha

During PT Travis was able to balance on the big green exercise ball for a good minute. I'm going to have to ask for another video shoot to record his improvement. Right after PT he tried on his socket for his right leg. It is a large plastic tube that was made from the mold taken of Travis leg. He was between 2 parallel bars with his forearms resting on the bars. When the socket was slipped on, Travis "stood up" to force his leg all the way into the socket. His leg would not quite go all the way in, so Kirk the prostethist is going to heat it and stretch it in the place he and Travis decided was too tight. Travis said that standing up did not seem like a foreign skill.
Travis had text messaged me to be in the Center for the Intrepid at 10:30 with my camera. When I walked into the main lobby on the 1st floor I saw a luncheon was being set up for some VIPs. A mexican buffet with the buffet table decorated to the max, and long tables with white table clothes and red cloth napkins and decorations in the middle of the tables. There was also a dessert table highly decorated and full of candied oranges, almond and chocolate candies, and a beautiful coconut blossom with an almond in the middle. I reminded myself I to check out the VIPs when I left the building. Well, when Travis finished with his fitting, he handed me two beautiful invitations with our names on them that said " Wounded Warriors and their families are invited to a FIESTA LUNCHEON in the main lobby of the Center for the Intreped." WE WERE THE VIPS! They had waiters who carried the plate of anyone who couldn't carry their own, and a Mariachi group that played the entire 2 hours. It was SO nice, Travis even said he loved the whole thing. It reminded me once again, just as the notes you leave on this website and the cards you send remind me everyday, that there are Americans everywhere wanting to support and help a
